概要

『カルメン・ポッサム』 (Carmen Possum) は、19世紀のアメリカで生まれた、ラテン語と英語を巧みに（そして面白おかしく）混ぜ合わせて作られた「マカロニック詩」^※です。作者は不明ですが、そのユニークな言葉遊びとユーモラスな物語は、長年にわたり多くの人々に親しまれてきました。

タイトルの Carmen Possum は、一見するとラテン語で「私は歌うことができる」と読めそうですが、実際には「オポッサムの歌」^※を意味しています。もっとも、どちらの解釈も厳密なラテン語の文法には沿っておらず、この詩の遊び心を象徴しています。

※ アメリカ北部では語頭の o- を落として possum と呼ばれます。
